The stool was the first design for Homecation.

Sandra had sent Johannes a photo of an old milking stool from her homeland of Transylvania, which has great emotional value for her, and asked him to reinterpret it.

The original stool is a typical, functional piece of farm furniture made of wood. It consists of a round seat, curved inwards at the top and outwards at the bottom, and three legs that are inserted into the seat from below and extend through to the top. So how can such a tried-and-tested classic be meaningfully redesigned?

The design should remain the same: a round seat with legs inserted. When thinking about milking stools, the image of a cow is quite fitting, and so the shape of the new Homecation stool – albeit abstractly, yet perceptibly – follows the form of a cow's udder. The stool has four legs, not just three, because a cow also has four teats.

Unlike the traditional Transylvanian milking stool, these are strictly cylindrical and do not taper towards the top or bottom. A key detail is the hemispherical rounded ends, which we found particularly appealing as they are reminiscent of Italian furniture from the 60s and 70s. This stylistic element is a recurring theme throughout the entire Homecation collection.

The legs are also angled and, like the original, are inserted into the seat from below (and glued in place), but they are much steeper than on the historical model to give the stool more linear tension and a strong, independent presence. The seat is round with an elegantly curved underside. Stools are often hybrid pieces of furniture in everyday life and are frequently used as side tables. Therefore, the top of this stool is flat and not curved, so that, for example, a glass or cup can easily be placed on it. This also offers production advantages, as the seat only needs to be CNC-milled from one side.
